The upgrades that actually matter for winter driving are proper winter tires, a healthy battery, and visibility. Tires make more difference than anything else on the list: a Wrangler on all-terrain tires in cold weather is far less capable than the same vehicle on dedicated winter rubber. After that come a battery load test, wiper and lighting upgrades, and underbody protection against road salt.

Engine swaps
A Jeep Wrangler V8 swap is not a cheap modification. A used donor engine alone runs $2,000 to $5,000, and a complete build including transmission, adapters, wiring, cooling, driveshafts and fuel system realistically lands between $12,000 and $25,000. Professional turnkey conversions from specialist shops frequently exceed $30,000.
Engine swaps
A diesel conversion is more expensive than most people expect. A Cummins R2.8 crate engine alone is around $9,000 before anything else, and a complete conversion including transmission adapter, cooling, fuel system, wiring and exhaust realistically runs $15,000 to $30,000. The fuel savings do not repay that within any reasonable ownership period.
Engine swaps
The Chrysler HEMI is the usual answer for a Wrangler V8 swap, because the adapters, mounts, wiring solutions and community knowledge already exist for it. LS swaps are the main alternative and have a larger aftermarket, at the cost of more integration work with Jeep electronics. Both are substantial projects rather than weekend jobs.
